Google has introduced four new attributes that businesses can use to enhance their Google My Business (GMB) listings in search results.
Carrie Hill, a local search analyst at Sterling Sky, Inc., notes that the following attributes have begun appearing in business knowledge panels:
- Online Care
- Online Appointment
- Online Estimates
- Online Classes
Businesses can add these new attributes, along with any existing ones, to their GMB profile, and Google may display them in search results for relevant queries.
Attributes in a Google My Business profile are designed to catch the eye of searchers by emphasizing important service offerings. These attributes help searchers make more informed decisions about their visits.
Traditionally, attributes have been tailored to in-person visits, such as "WiFi" and "outdoor seating." However, many businesses are now offering online services due to ongoing restrictions, and people are increasingly seeking online alternatives to in-person services. This includes services from doctors, fitness instructors, therapists, and others.
Given these changes, it’s important to update Google My Business accordingly.
How to Add Attributes to Your Google My Business Listing
Businesses can add new or existing attributes to their Google My Business listing by following these steps:
- Sign in to Google My Business.
- Open the location you’d like to manage.
- From the menu, click Info.
- Find Add Attributes and click Edit.
- You can search for the attribute you want to add or scroll through all the available options for your business.
- When you’re finished updating your attributes, click Apply.
It’s important to note that not all businesses have access to all attributes. The available attributes vary according to the business category. For example, a pizza delivery place would not be able to add attributes such as "online care" and "online classes" to its GMB listing.
If your business offers any of the four new attributes as services, you’ll likely have access to them in GMB.
Google has been continuously updating its GMB platform since the onset of the pandemic. This is the second time new attributes have been added in less than a month. In May, Google My Business introduced three new attributes to help restaurants highlight whether they offer dine-in, takeout, or delivery services.
As businesses begin to reopen, it’s anticipated that future attributes will focus on safety measures. For instance, businesses might soon be able to indicate if masks are mandatory or optional. Similarly, it could become important for businesses to highlight their maximum capacity, helping searchers decide the best times to visit.
Such developments are expected as businesses continue to adapt to the "new normal."
